The Internet-based Jimmy Bruno Guitar Institute (JBGI) announces that it has quadrupled in size, in just the last six months, to over 1350 paying students. Digital Music - Home Studio Music Recording
By Brian Beshore

Home recording has come a long way in the last few decades. Many people do not realize that much of what they hear on T.V. and in commercials is electric.

Many people still have a negative connotation about how electric music sounds. They think that it must always have a cheesy sound.

Part of this stigma is the confusion over midi. and wav. sound files. Simply put, midi is a signal that is sent to a sound card and triggers a note on a preset instrument sound. Therefore, the sound you get from a midi. sound file will only be as good as the sound card you are using.

The Digital Lowdown - Digital Only Releases: Pros and Cons

“When does your CD come out?”
by Steven Corn (BFM Digital),

More often than not, a typical response from an artist is that they are planning a digital only release and then they’ll see how it goes. The decision to press CDs is usually postponed until it is determined if the album sells online or not. Practically every week, there is another digital-only label popping up while all the pundits proclaim the impending death of the CD-format.

Jimi Hendrix Experience’s “Are You Experienced?”

Cover Story Interview with photography by Karl Ferris
Mike Goldstein, RockPop Gallery,

Subject: Are You Experienced?, a 1967 release (on Reprise Records) by the Jimi Hendrix Experience, with cover photo & design by Karl Ferris

Considered by many music fans and critics as one of the (if not THE) greatest debut record from a rock-era artist, Are You Experienced (with or without the ?) also illustrated how records were produced, packaged and tailored for distribution to the world’s music marketplaces. Released in the U.K. in May, 1967, the record was a compilation of the fantastic music and performances that had been wowing crowds in London theaters up to that point. Those crowds included most of members of the leading musical acts of the time - including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Animals, The Hollies, The Who (and many others) who’d all come to watch and listen in stunned amazement to the trio’s musical magic.

Music Publishing For Today’s Market
by Allen Johnston,

MusicDish Network Sponsor
Before the invention of the phonograph, songwriters earned income by relying on music publishers to sell sheet music and piano rolls of their songs. Even as radio and television replaced the piano in the parlor, music publishers continued to play an important role as popular singers continued to rely upon established songwriters to provide their material. (Tin Pan Alley) However, with the advent of R&B (and especially the Motown era) popular recording artists began to write more of their own songs. Since that time, the music publishing industry has taken on a less important role for singers and a much more important role for revenue growth.

How many times have you read in an online forum or a web design tutorial that embedded midi (Musical Instrumental Digital Interface) files are “bad"? Probably more times than you care to remember. For the most part, embedded sound files of any kind have been categorized as web site “bling-bling", right along side animated gifs, flashing banners and complex frames layouts. Essentially, they just contribute to unnecessary glitz and clutter that does nothing more than distract visitors and significantly slow page download times.

In today’s digital world, musicians have choices as to how they present their music in a live setting. The gamut can run from a 7 piece band playing all the parts to a one man show using backing tracks to complete the act.

Backing Tracks are great for smaller acts to sound like a full blown band or orchestra. In many clubs, you can find a guitar player playing and singing along to the tracks. These musicians have choices as to the format of those backing tracks.

In reality MIDI files are very petite since they use your sound card’s built-in instruments for crafting the sounds. The problem is that most sound cards don’t have any decent sounds to start with, plus no two sound cards sound alike and therefore the results are very erratic. MIDI files usually sound like they’re coming from one of those cheap Casio keyboards. Using MIDI for background music is very likely to make your site seem sloppy. Want to know how to do it anyway? Just add the line to your site and when the page gets loaded the file will be played robotically by the command named Auto Start. Although professional sound recording packages can be fairly costly, you can get your feet wet by trying out one of the obtainable shareware programs.

Sarah Schmalenberger, hornist and musicologist, has launched the Life and Livelihood Study at http://www.musiciansurvivor.org in order to examine the physical and occupational well-being of women musicians who have had breast cancer. This national study has been designed to develop a profile of how the diagnosis and treatment of the disease affects women musicians. Physical problems during recovery from breast cancer treatment can be particularly burdensome to musicians, because of their physically demanding occupations or avocations. Unfortunately, scientific research on the number of women musicians diagnosed with breast cancer and the medical and occupational well-being of musicians after breast cancer is essentially nonexistent.

Well, I couldn’t wait a full week to get this one out because, not only is it so important, but it is, in fact, vital and can get you involved *very* quickly in a lawsuit, which could be financially devastating to your career.

Plus, as I would have normally published this article on this coming Friday, I am otherwise headed to Houston this weekend to record my new single titled, “Vampire Love.” :-)

"You can use my daughter’s guitar. She tried to learn how to play a few years ago, but quit because her fingers hurt too much."

Saroun had invited me to join them for a Barbeque at her home, after church. There were requests for me to lead them in some worship songs, but I didn’t have a guitar with me.

September 14, 2007, Friday afternoon, Hugh E. Thomasson (Hughie) was laid to rest. There were several members of the southern rock era there offering their support including the Allman Brothers band, Marshall Tucker, .38 Special, and of course the remaining members of The Outlaws, along with family and friends.

The memorial service began with family photos and a CD that Hughie had made with his granddaughter. It become obvious, early into the service, that Hughie’s biggest priority had been his family. Each member told their fondest recollections of times spent together. The chance was then given to all who knew him to take a moment to share their own stories of how they came to know Hughie.

The music world mourns the loss of the pioneer of Southern Rock music, a great guitarist, vocalist and friend. His memory will live on through his songs and in our hearts. Hughie will be sadly missed.

By Frank Guidry, the Founding Member of The Outlaws.

Digital Music File Formats
By Paul Katsande

An uncompressed digital music file (such as that on a music CD) uses 10MB or more per minute (at least 30MB for a 3 minute song).

These files have to be compressed to the more usual levels of 3-5MB per song. Compression rearranges the sequence of numbers, sometimes throwing away less significant information, in order to reduce the file size. The way the compression is achieved leads to the many different audio file formats available. Below is a list of the popular formats used by MP3 players.

For Immediate Release
Pakistan
2.22.05

A series of 5 concerts from Jan 18-22nd has helped raise over $10,000 towards the Tsunami relief effort. The music performed was a mix of American and and Hindi or Urdu music, with the former being contributed to by CYBERMIDI. In total, about 20,000 attended this Paksistani concert series, with most of the contributions by college students.

Ali Moeen, a musician and CYBERMIDI member participated in the event, and programmed much of the Hindi music. “We feel the concerts were a huge success. While the amount raised may seem modest, the average income in this area is quite small, and the funds raised were quite generous in relation. More events are scheduled and with the help of CYBERMIDI we are hoping to raise somewhat near to $50,000 and we will because we are determined.”

Special Thanks to Mr. Ajay Rao who greaty participated and orgainized the event.

Credits go to Nafs(an underground band). Pictured from left to right: Faraz(guest performer), Ali Moeen), Nobel(Guest Performer) and Sir Ajay Rao(vocalist).
